Efficacy against oil palm rats in Malaysia. Flocoumafen, a new second generation anticoagulant rodenticide.

Laboratory tests have shown that flocoumafen at 60 mg ai/kg concentration in bait, is highly effective against both major rat species, Rattus tiomanicus and Rattus rattus diardii attacking oil palm. Indeed its potency was such that a lethal dose was delivered in a single feeding. Very good bait acceptance was also observed, confirming the absence of bait shyness. These trials also demonstrated that flocoumafen was equally effective against resistant rats. Field trials in both warfarin resistant and warfarin susceptible localities have confirmed the high palatability and efficacy of flocoumafen under typical use conditions. In one trial for example, flocoumafen wax block baits (50 ppm) were compared with other commonly used 'second generation' anticoagulant rodenticides. Although all of the treatments gave excellent rat control, less flocoumafen bait was needed to achieve control comparable to that of the other treatments.
