In this paper, a general description is given of four villages in East Java, each within a district Agroecological Zone. A multidisciplinarian team, including physical and social scientists, carried out data collection using established methods of Rapid Rural Appraisal (RRA). Agroecosystems analysis was used to identify linkages in various agricultural systems and raise key questions relating to problems in agricultural development.
