Consumers' food choices reflect mixed practices.
America is changing its diet. This is evidenced in comparison surveys conducted by the Food Marketing Institute. Comparing 1984, 1985, and 1986, it is evident that most Americans are interested in nutrition. Major concern about nutrient content of foods were vitamins/minerals, salt, sugar, fat and additives. Overall nutritional value and caloric content seemed to be less important. More consumers rely on themselves and the Federal Government rather than state governments, consumer groups, manufacturers or retailers for ensuring food safety. Survey results are tabulated.(jd-b).
