Horse mussel (Modiolus senhausenii) have a kidney shape like green mussel (Perna sp) but smaller size. The habitat of horse mussel on mud flat in coastal area with water salinity about 15-25 ppt and temperature about 28-33 degree celsius. The maturation needs 2-4 months and reaches to 3-4 cm at 4-8 months. The horse mussel was eradicated by the farmer in oyster and cockle farm because it covered oyster and cockle causing high mortality. Now its used as food for shrimps, mud crab, and laying-duck and specially for human cheap protein source. The potential culture area is about 4,600 ha. Production of horse mussel is about 7,000-32,000 ton/year. The large production areas are Surat-Thani and Phang-Nga province. In the future, this species will play an important role in aquaculture substituting for the trash fish and increase oyster farmer income.
