The Angoumois grain moth, Sitotriga cerealella is a key pest of stored maize grain in southern Ethiopia. The present study on the pest has included general survey, testing of local materials, screening of maize varieties and chemical screening. Survey work on S. cerealella was conducted within four major maize growing districts of the Sidamo Administrative Region and it has shown that the pest is considered to be important as it causes high damage level in all surveyed sites. The population size of this pest was also the highest when compared to the other pests. Local materials tested included wood ash, sand, tobacco dust and sawdust. Tobacco dust gave the best result in terms of reducing S. cerealella population and its damage. Twenty two maize varieties were tested for resistance (under free and/or no-choice tests) against S. cerealella and great variations were observed among the varieties. Variety UCB which showed resistance to the pest under free-choice test did not maintain its performance under no-choice test. Hybrid H-8151 showed a good level of resistance under both types of tests. Screening of insecticides for control of S. cerealella has shown that primiphos-methyl, deltamethrin, primiphos-mythyl + permethrin and malathin + permethrin gave complete control of the pest.
