Yield trial of different lowland varieties of rice at WMSU, San Ramon, Zamboanga City [Philippines].

Eight varieties of rice were planted during wet season 1993 and agronomic and yield characteristics were evaluated. Results revealed that plant height differ significantly among varieties. Three varieties such as IR-66, PSBRC4 AND PSBRC 2 were observed to be tall. Slightly prone to lodging was PSBRC 4. No significant differences exists among varieties in terms of the number of panicle per hill, however, panicle length, number of spikelets per panicle during flowering, number of grains per panicle at harvest were statistically significant. Weight of 1,000 grains differ among varieties. IR-74 and PSBRC 4 were significantly heavier in comparison to other varieties. This may be attributed to the size of the seeds of the varieties. Yield in kg/ha of the test varieties revealed no significant difference at all. Responses to insect pests and diseases showed that IR-74 and PSBRC 2 were susceptible to leaf folder and PSBRC 4 to False Smut Disease.
