Considering the growing need for food production, particularly grains in traditional or new areas in tropical regions, there are at least two alternatives to overcome this problem. One of them would be the usual combination of supplying nutrients through fertilizer and lime applications on the soil, irrigation, and seeding only when climatic conditions are favorable to crop development. The other alternative would be to explore genetic variability of different species and through selection in segregating populations to obtain cultivars with these characteristics: a) adaptation to medium or low soil nutrient content but better efficiency in its uptake and use; b) tolerance to aluminum, iron and manganese toxicities; c) adaptation to produce economically under low water availability and d) capacity for producing grains under high temperatures and low relative humidity avoiding spike sterility.
