Current breeding programme on industrial crops in Indonesia.

There are two main reasons why the breeding programmes of most industrial crops cannot be carried out smoothly. First, most industrial crops belong to the perennial group, which has a relatively long life cycle. Second, a great number have very limited genetic diversity. The low yield capacity per hectare of some crops is mainly due to certain diseases caused by fungi, bacteria, viruses and nematodes, in addition to several kinds of pests. Efforts have been made to overcome these problems, particularly by improving cultural practices, as well as by plant breeding; however, most of these problems have yet to be solved. Reviewed here are some of the problems of breeding industrial crops of economic importance, with regard to work done in the past and the problems now facing the Industrial Crops Research Institute and farmers. It seems that nuclear techniques are badly needed as a new means in breeding programmes, especially on certain crops with a narrow spectrum of genetic diversity. Special reference has been given to the search for plants that show resistance to the major diseases and pests. (author).
