To elucidate the potential of ducks as bio-agent of golden snail (Pomacea caniculata), it was integrated into the lowland rice culture in Zamboanga del Sur [Philippines]. Varying number of ducks per hectare against kuhol (snail) was tested in a moderately clay loam soil with pH ranging from 5.6-6.0. A super-imposed trial was conducted during the four consecutive cropping season of 1988-1990. The integration of ducks significantly reduced snail population. Timely grazing of ducks in the field immediately after harvest and at one month after transplanting adequately keep kuhol number in check. The pest was not completely eradicated but employing ducks as bio-agent maintained the abundance of the pest to a tolerable level. Economic analysis showed an increased net income upon integrating ducks in the system.
