Feasibility of converting a sugarcane farm in Cagayan province [Philippines] into hybrid yellow corn with postharvest facilities.

The industry analysis revealed that there exist a substantial supply/demand gap which is expected to persist at least until the 1990's. This shortage makes the marketing of yellow corn a fairly easy task, either via middlemen or direct to the end-users (commercial feedmillers and integrated livestock raisers). Prices historically have fluctuated above or below the National Food Authority selling price depending on whether it is harvest or growing season. But starting the last quarter of 1984 to the present, commercial selling prices have averaged more than 10% above NFA price. There are no indicators that this trend will be reversed. The soil studies conducted on subject farm have indicated their suitability for corn growing. The post-harvest facilities is however inadequate. The establishment of these facilities was considered necessary assuming long-term financing is obtained from either the Maisagana, TRC Agro-Industrial Technology Transfer Program, or IGLF. The project appears profitable and self-liquidating.
