Evaluation of Prime + 250 as a desuckering chemical for flue-cured tobacco.

The treatments affected the number of suckers, sucker length and oven dry weight (ODW) of the upper suckers. Manually desuckered plants produced the most number of lower and upper suckers, 15.9 and 17.0 suckers/plant, respectively. Plants treated with Prime + 250 at the rate of 62.25 mg/plant applied seven days after topping produced the least number of lower suckers (4.1/plant). Likewise, the least number of upper suckers was observed when Prime + 250 (62.25 mg a.i./plant) and pendimethalin (62.25 mg a i/plant) were applied at topping with 0.7 and 0.5 suckers/plant, respectively. Generally, sucker growth was not inhibited when tar chemicals were applied seven days after topping. The ODW of the lower suckers was not affected by the sucker control treatments. The shortest lower sucker were observed in manual desuckering and Prime + 250 at the rate of 62.25 mg a i/plant while the shortest upper suckers were observed when Prime + 250 (37.5 mg a i/plant) and Pendimenthalin (62.25 mg a i/plant) were applied. The ODW of the suckers reflects the extent of the sucker growth and dry matter production.
