Screening Thai rice varieties resistant to the root-knot nematode, Meloidogyne graminicola Golden and Birchfield was conducted under field conditions at Ubonrajthani Rice Research Center. The reactions were scored by rating root gall index. Three varieties, RD. 6, Mong Kha Mai and Khao Dawk Mali 105, out of 82 varieties were considered resistant to the nematode infection. The rate of root-knot nematode penetration was measured by the use of second larval stage inoculation into the rice plant roots. Larvae entered the roots 24 hours after inoculation. The average number of larvae per plant in roots of RD. 6, Mong Kha Mai and Khao Dawk Mali 105 at 120 hours after inoculation were 5.4, 13.6 and 13.6, respectively, while the number per plant of larvae in the roots of a susceptible variety, Hahng Yi 71 was 35.6. There were some larvae that moved out of the roots of Mong Kha Mai variety at 96 hours after inoculation. The development of root-knot nematode in terms of female, egg and larva sizes was less than in the susceptible varieties. Cell wall of giant cells was thinner and the size of giant cells was smaller than that in resistance varieties when compared with susceptible varieties. However, the level of resistance to root-knot nematode in these rice varieties was also directly correlated with the rate of penetration and nematode size.
