The present paper deals with the prospective development of different lowland farm types in Switzerland. It is dependent on a number of factors, the most important being the initial situation of the farms, the possibilities of development and decisions made by the farming families, technical progress, and the future economic environment. A farm development model is used to simultaneously record these factors and simulate their consequences on arable farming and forage growing, fertilisation, animal husbandry, and incomes.
