In a 6 x 6 diallel analysis, involving 'IS 9889', 'IS 6962', 'E 143-1', 'IS 20503', 'Co 23' and 'Co 24' varieties of sorghum Sorghum bicolor (Linn.) Moench, both general and specific combining ability variances were significant for percentage of extractable juice, total soluble solids, sucrose content, total sugar content and reducing sugar content, indicating the preponderance of additive as well as non-additive gene effects. The genetic components of variation showed the predominance of dominant and non-allelic interactions for all these traits. 'IS 6962' x 'IS 20503' and 'IS 9889' x 'Co 24' and 'IS 6962' x 'Co 23' showed high mean coupled with significant sca effects for all the traits. The better varieties having high total soluble solids, sucrose content and extractable juice would be obtained by advancing the cross-combinations, viz. 'IS 6962' x 'IS 20503', 'IS 9889' x 'Co 24' and 'IS 6962' x 'Co 23', through reciprocal recurrent selection, or through intermatings of the selected progenies of the above cross-combinations.
