In rice, diploid plants can be obtained by vegetative propagation of haploid plants although frequency of occurrence is very low. Thus, a study was carried out to generate information on the expression pattern of diploid plants induced by x-ray irradiation of haploids. Irradiation at 4 and 6 kRs of x-ray at 200 R/min dose rate of anther culture-induced haploids of Japanese cultivars, Norin 8 and Nipponbare, resulted to "double haploids". Based on spikelet sterility and grain size, doubled haploid plants were clasified into three types: DH-1 (normally sized fertile spikelets); DH-2 (normally sized sterile spikelets); and DH-3 (small but fertile spikelets) with frequencies of occurrence at 63.9, 8.3 and 26.8 percent, respectively. Most of the "double-haploid" plants with partly sterile spikelets seemed to be either sectorial or mericlinal chimeras with respect to chromosome number. Self progenies of both DH-1 were of DH-1 type.
