The influence of humates applied into soil at different levels of persistent herbicides was verified in the laboratory biological test, pot experiments and under field conditions. The humates were obtained by alkaline extraction of lignite from the Gbely deposit (Slovakia). The spring barley crop and also the crop of peas grain decreased depending on application rates of atrazine (active ingredient of the Zeazin-S-50 herbicide), therbutrine and therbutylasine (active ingredients of Topogard-WP-50 herbicides). Humates eliminated some negative influence of the herbicides used. Their influence was limited by the content of herbicides in the soil. That the speed of residue degradation in the soil is dependent on the experiment conditions was confirmed.
