Two local varieties with certain contrasting characters were hybridized. Hybrid vigour in the F1 was observed to be significant for the characters canopy spread and total yield per plant. The F2 segregation ratios indicated: incomplete dominance of dark purple pigmentation over non-purple pigmentation; complete dominance of dark purple pigmentation over non-purple pigmentation; complete dominance of spined calyx over spineless calyx; complete dominance of grooved fruit surface over smooth fruit surface that involved 2 loci. The flowering was partially dominant to early flowering with the number of days to first flowering being controlled by non-additive gene action. The weight of fruit of the F1 hybrid was intermediate to that of the parents and the number of loci controlling was estimated to be 8. The number of loci controlling fruit shape was estimated to be 3 while the number of loci estimated to control the length of fruit and maximum girth of fruit was 3 and 6 respectively.
