The result could be summarized as follows: (1) Flooding soils treated with activated sludge regardless of rate, brought about increase of COD reaching the peak at 2 weeks after submergence and then decreased gradually; (2) Activated sludge in general did not affect the COD release, but the lead significantly influenced the COD; (3) Positive relationship between the NH4+ - N release and the rate of activated sludge was also observed; (4) Activated sludge at 1.2 percent rate was the best with respect to such growth characteristics as height, tillering, fresh weight and dry weight of the RD.7 rice; (5) Activated sludge at 1.2 percent dose also gave the highest uptake of both nitrogen and phosphorus for both top and root of rice plant; (6) Increase in the content and uptake of lead, could be observed only up to 100 ppm Pb applied. Application of Pb at 1,000 ppm killed the rice plant.
