The suitability of sugar beet varieties for their mechanized cultivation is determined by: high germinating power of the seed stock (at least 60 ) and single seeds; the shape of beet heads and uniformity of distribution over the soil; the form of roots and soil separation easiness; high productivity (amount of the sugar produced). Totally, 40 sugar beet varieties have been investigated, but only 9 varieties grown in Latvia for 3 years have been evaluated in the given research. Sugar beets were grown without thinning, seeds were sown at extreme spaces of 16-18 cm. The objects of research were: the plant density (after sprouting and after harvesting), sugar beet yield, sugar content and sugar productivity, their average, maximum and minimum values. As the result of the research several foreign and local varieties most suitable for Latvia are defined.
