Nutrient density and food labeling.

A graphic format for food labels is proposed and discussed. The format is easily understood and readily conveys accurate nutrition information concerning food products. The utility of this format has been evaluated with elementary school students and consumers. The results of this evaluation suggest that graphic food labels could significantly aid consumers in understanding proper nutrition. It is proposed that food labels would be more informative and useful if the contents of the nutrients were expressed on a kcal basis. The graphic format would provide direct information on the percent of the RDA provided for each nutrient tabulated for a given food product.(wz).
