Survey was conducted to understand the distribution of Sitotroga cerealella in Sidamo Administrative Region (Southern Ethiopia). The effect of locally available materials, the response of different maize varieties and the effect of various insecticides were also studied under laboratory condition. For the pest control experiments maize kernels were artificially infested with newly emerged S. cerealella moths. The parameters observed were proportion of S. cerealella in relation to other insect species, number of emerged moths, percent kernel damage and percent germination. Sitotroga cerealella was recorded in all the surveyed sites. Control experiments revealed that tobacco dust, a maize variety H-8151, primiphosmethyl and its mixture with permethrin were found to be effective in the management of S. cerealella. The study suggested that S. cerealella is the most important stored maize grain in southern Ethiopia. As part of integrated management of the pest the use of tobacco dust, a maize variety H-8151 and primiphos methyl effective insecticide are found useful.
