Morphophysiological properties of leaves and stems of diploid and polyploid tea cultivars Mestnyi, Kimyn', and Kolkhida as well as the accumulation of soluble phenolic compounds, the flavanes and flavanoles, have been studied. It has been shown that morphological specifities and the leaf size allow no classification of tea plants with regard to the ploidy level. Various forms of one and the same cultivar differ in the level of soluble phenolic compounds and flavanes (not flavanoles) in leaves and stems. In most cases, diploid cultivars contained more phenolic compounds as compared to polyploid ones, the cultivar Kolkhida being the only exception.
