In Canary Island waters we have carried out a seasonal study of the fractioning of phytoplankton in the categories of ultraplankton, nannoplankton and net plankton in two fixed stations: one coastal and the other oceanic. Work began on April, 1978 and was concluded on March, 1979. It was observed that ultraplankton is the most important fraction of the three considered as phytoplankton. In the coastal station this supposed 71.1% of the total number of cells, 63.0% of the total productivity of phytoplankton and 77.8% of the total concentration of chlorophyll. The percentages corresponding to the oceanic station were: 72.8% for the number of cells, 64.3% for productivity and 76.9% for chlorophyll. No significant differences were found between the two stations, although the values obtained for cells, productivity and chlorophyll were slightly higher at the coastal station, but this was not the case in the intervals net plankton/nannoplankton + ultraplankton ratios.
