Omethoate was toxic to some rhizobia on direct contact in agar and broth cultures. Mixed with peat-based seed inoculant applied to seed of subterranean clover or lucerne it significantly reduced the number of nodules formed by seedlings over 3 weeks in pots of sand. Seed pretreatment 16 hours before inoculation had no effect on nodulation or rhizobia numbers of sub clover sown into moist sand. With lucerne, the number of nodules formed under those conditions was less at day 21 but not at day 30, at which time dry matter yield was also unaltered. In a field trial with pea, white clover and murex medic, seed pretreatment with omethoate before inoculation had no effect on nodule number 9 - 11 weeks after sowing.
