In 1991-1993 many investigations in Sachsen-Thueringen (East Germany) were conducted by ARGE Zeit and Bodengesundheitsdienst. The aim was to get knowledge about the N supply from soil and to optimize N dressing of sugar beet. At drilling time sugar beet soils contained about 200 kg N per ha as nitrate and ammonium. During season additional 180 kg N per ha were mineralized. Since 1991, 10 500 EUF soil samples from farmers in East Germany were analysed. More than 70 per cent of EUF N fertilizer recommendations were in a range of 30 - 80 kg N per ha. This is much less than usual farmer's practice.
