Prediction of developmental stages of silage corn based on temperature responses and mesh maps for estimation of optimal cropping seasons.

In regions where developmental processes of crops are mainly determined by air temperature, prediction of the developmental stages based on the temperature response on grid mesh basis may contribute to the selection of suitable species or cultivars and determination of optimal cropping seasons for the establishment of more suitable and efficient agricultural systems for the regions. In the current study, the Tokachi area in Hokkaido was selected as an example of district. Relationships between daily mean air temperature and developmental rate (DVR) in silage corn were analyzed using a Nonparametric method, recently developed. Daily mean air temperature (30 year normal) within a grid mesh (1 km x 1 km) was estimated all over the Tokachi district. Developmental stages (emergence time of seedlings, silking stage and yellow ripe stage) were predicted in each mesh using the daily mean air temperatures in a grid mesh and the developmental rate (DVR) obtained by the analysis. According to the prediction, mesh maps for the estimation of the optimal cropping season were constructed for silage corn cultivars in the district. In addition, the degree of accuracy in the prediction of the developmental stages was compared between the Nonparametric method and the Accumulated temperature method which is widely used in silage corn, especially in Hokkaido.
