Preliminary investigation of a fungus attacking nematodes in Leyte [Philippines].

In a survey made in six localities in Leyte [Philippines] where corn is grown, it was observed that plant parasitic and freeliving nematodes were parasitized by a fungus. Average parasitism based on dead nematodes ranged from 0.5-1.5 and 3.6-12.2, respectively. The plant parasitic nematodes attacked were Pratylenchus, Helicotylenchus, Criconemoides, Haplolaimus, Xiphinema, and Longidorus, while the free-living ones were Dorylaimus and Rhabditis. All the parasitized nematodes were dead. Microscopic examination revealed that the fungus under study was totally different from previously reported ones. It occupied the whole body length of the nematodes and produced thick-walled round or ovoid spores inside the nematode body. Attempts to isolate the fungus from the host nematodes and grow it using tryptone glucose yeast extract agar (TGYA) and potato dextrose agar (PDA) failed.
