Diagnostic ultrasonography (DU) was carried out on a dog and 5 cats having noncardiac intrathoracic disorders. Results of DU were also compared with radiography results. In the cases of diaphragmatic hernia, the herniated organs such as liver, spleen and intestine could be diagnosed precisely. Abnormal echo of the diaphragma suggesting its pathologic condition and the site of diaphragmatic rupture were also observed. In the cases of intrathoracic masses, the size, shape and location of masses and the interrelationship between the masses and adjacent organs of thoracic cavity could each be visualized. Furthermore, the nature of internal echo of the masses also could be interpreted. It was suggested from a dog with pulmonary tumor the pulmonary consolidated lesions located near the surface of the lung could be imaged by DU. From the ultrasonographic observation of pleural fluid, it was shown that pleural fluid was detected easily and its character was also evaluated by DU. It was also found that pleural fluid has roles as a contrast medium and an ultrasonographic acoustic window for detecting intrathoracic lesions undifferentiated by radiographic examination. From the results of the present investigation, it is demonstrated that DU is useful for evaluation of noncardiac intrathoracic disorders of dog and cat and provides the valuable diagnostic information not obtainable by radiography.
