Liming significantly increased nodule number, nodule weight, amount of N in plant, amount of N fixed, pod yield, shelling percentage, and grain yield of peanut. Inoculation and application of 40 kg N fertilizer were almost equal. Amount of N fixed by peanut was markedly reduced when applied with 40 kg N fertilizer on both limed and unlimed plots. Higher nodule number, nodule weight, amount of N in plant, amount of N fixed, pod yield, shelling percentage, grain yield of peanut were obtained on limed plots compared to the unlimed plots. Inoculation and application of 40 kg N fertilizer in all cases, were almost equal. Inoculation therefore, can replace or substitute the use of commercial inorganic nitrogen containing fertilizers. Highest net return was obtained from limed plots, by inoculation combined with 40 kg N fertilizer. The use of inoculant gave a net return which was also equal to the use of 40 kg N fertilizer and gave the highest net return on investment on both limed and unlimed plots. Rhizobium inoculation therefore, can substitute the use of 40 kg N fertilizer.
