Behaviour of selenium during weathering of volcanic rocks and soil formation in Serbia [Yugoslavia].

Volcanic rocks are very abundant rocks in Serbia (Yugoslavia), especially those of Cretaceous and Tertiary age. They weathered in similar and topographical conditions forming soils which are of small thickness (15-30 cm). Selenium contents in various volcanic rocks in Serbia vary from 17 microgram/kg in rhyodacite to 57 microgram/kg in basalt (mean value 26 microgram/kg). During their weathering selenium content was increased (23-139 microgram/kg). Soils derived from these rocks contain much more selenium (121-312 microgram/kg) than parent rocks. Ratios between selenium in soils and selenium in fresh rocks showed values 4.0-10.4. It was concluded that soils derived from mafic volcanic rocks (basalts) contain higher amounts of selenium than soils formed from acidic and intermediate volcanic rocks. The studied soils are very poor in selenium and it could cause serious deficiency in the future.
