The nutritive value of cattle feed in mediterranean countries.
1989
Guessous F.
Dairy cattle feeding in the southern part of the Mediterranean area is dependent on cultivated forages, straw, and bypoducts. Winter Mediterranean climate characteristics allow cultivation of high nutritive value forages such as berseem and Italian ryegrass. When water is available in summer, high yielding species like alfalfa and sudan grass can be produced. When harvested at advanced stages of maturity during the hot months, these species can present low digestibility and intake levels. Preliminary data on Moroccan straw seem to indicate a higher nutritive value in comparison to northern Europe and USA straw. There is a need for more investigations on this feed and agro-industrial byproducts.
