The holm oak (Quercus ilex L.) forest at the Prades Experimental Complex of Catchments (NE Spain) was managed buy clearcutting, until the 1950's. In order to release resources, reducing stems competition and improve forest coppiced productivity, a thinning experiment was designed at Prades in 1992. Four different thinning intensities were replicated in three random located circular plots of 0.5 ha (0-control-, 55 plus minus 2, 72 plus minus 3 and 79 plus minus 4 per cent of basal area). The present study evaluates the root biomass, nutrient content and mineralomass in the bark and wood, as well as the aboveground/belowground biomass ratio. The results obtained two years after treatments, indicated that the belowground biomass of individuals has been mobilized to the growth of their aerial parts. Evidences of belowground biomass or mineralomass mobilization after thinning to the aerial parts are shown by the different pattern of belowground biomass or mineralomass related to the basal area (before treatment) or to the perimeter. This relation shows a lower slope for individuals from thinning plots as compared to individuals from control plots. This mobilization is mainly explained by carbon mass re-distribution and other nutrients which showed a similar pattern. Ca seems to be an element which is not mobilizated before the treatment. In conclusion, it can be considered that the reserve contained in the subterranean part of Quercus ilex contributes to the growth of new structures being aerial or subterranean.
