Fruit crop research in Trinidad.
1992
Ragoonath J.
Passion fruit, carambola and pineapple have been identified for priority research. This was justified because they are non traditional crops and can therefore be considered for the diversification drive; almost continuous production is possible. They have a short gestation; fruits are produced in two years, they can therefore contribute to rapid development; there is a demand for these crops on the local and export market. The objectives of the research are characterization of germplasm present in Trinidad and Tobago; selection of suitable types for processing and fresh fruit; establishment and maintenance of a gene bank of selected types; evaluation of control measures for diseases; progeny testing of fresh fruit selection; assessment of propagation techniques among others.
