Characterization of Pili (Canarium ovatum) nut and pulp oil.

The oil from the nut and pulp of two pili varieties (Canarium ovatum Engler) were extracted with petroleum ether (dry extraction) and chloroform-methanol (wet extraction). The oil content of the nut and pulp ranged from 89.6-94.2% and 32.5-41.3%, respectively. Wet extraction yielded more oil than dry extraction. The physical and chemical characteristics namely, specific gravity, refractive index, saponification number, hydroxyl value, unsaponifiable matter, and free fatty acid number were determined. Specific gravity, saponification number and hydroxyl number, were higher for nut oils, while iodine number, unsaponifiable matter and free fatty acid number were higher for pulp oils. The refractive indices were comparable. Fatty acid analysis by gas-liquid chromatography revealed the predominance of oleic acid and palmitic acids. Linoleic acid was present in substantial amounts. Stearic acid in pulp oil was very much lower than that in the nut oil.
