Fixed ammonium in the interlayer regions of layer silicates must be taken into due consideration as a reserve of soil nitrogen. The capacity of soil to fix NH4+ is related to the presence of 2:1 type layer silicates and is influenced by pedoclimatic factors. The pool of fixed ammonium varies from soil to soil. Nitrification processes and plant uptake can lead to the release and utilization of fixed NH4+. Ammonium nitrogen from fertilizers can also increase the natural soil reserve. The conventional Kjeldahl method allows the determination of total nitrogen and the conventional procedure for determining fixed ammonium often results in an understimate, of the actual ammonium content of soil. It is necessary to take into consideration the actual behaviour of the fixed nitrogen in the soil.
