Experiment was carried out with 3 groups of 17 Hungarian Simmental x Holstein Friesian R1-R3 growing bulls kept in tied down system. Different genotypes were represented identically in the groups. Cereal intake of the groups was identical in the average of the experiment, however, cereal rations were varied with the age and average live weight of groups. In the period of the experiment bulk feed intake of the groups, FCR, weight gain rate, carcase and meat composition and economy of the fattening was studied. There were no differences among the control and experimental groups in respect of the whole experiment. In the fattening based on sugar beet slice the significance of cereals decreases. Protein requirement of fattening increases with increasing live weight as much as the utilization of the protein decreases. Different requirements for energy intake can be met with sugar beet slice owing to its readily utilized energy content.
