Performance of 14 lines of sweet potato at NOMIARC [Northern Mindanao Integrated Agricultural Research Center]

Sweet potato is the second most popular rootcrop after cassava. It can be used as food, substitute for feeds and for industrial uses as flour and starch. A trial was conducted at Department of Agriculture (DA-10) Northern Mindanao Integrated Agricultural Research Center, Dalwangan, Malaybalay City during the year 2009-2010. Fourteen lines/varieties were evaluated for yield, dry matter, good eating quality and resistance to pests. The trial was laid out in randomized complete block design (RCBD) with four replicates. Results showed that during the first trial (CY 2009) dry season line JOG 11-10 exhibited the highest total yield and marketable yield of 27.89 and 25.81 tons/ha, respectively. This line outyielded all lines tested including the check variety NSIC No. 31, which had the second highest yield of 23.79 tons/ha. However, during the second trial (CY 2010) wet season, line SG-02-07-05 obtained the highest total yield and marketable yield with 31.83 and 31.02 t/ha followed by JOG-11-10 with 24.10 and 21.98 total and marketable yield, respectively. As to dry matter content, line JOG-30-3 and SP 30 had the highest with 62% and 61%, respectively. NSIC No.31 and SP 30 were most preferred or liked very much by the testers as to general acceptability, as to texture, appearance, palatability and color. Moreover, economic analysis showed that line JOG 11-10 had R0I of 231.8% (dry season) and SG 02-07 obtained the highest R0I of 298.8% during wet season.
