Evaluation of different potato varieties and lines for bacterial wilt susceptibility

Nowadays, the increasing demand of disease free planting material happens to be a problem due to lack of available seed that was tolerant to BW infection. The study evaluate 18 varieties and 4 lines of white potato currently found in the germplasm of NOMIARC Plant Tissue laboratory for bacterial wilt susceptibility trial. The project aims to promote other tolerant variety that can be an alternate for Granola, the most accepted variety and currently utilize by potato farmers. Results revealed that BW incidences showed significant difference among the varieties and lines evaluated as influenced by inoculating Ralstonia solanacearum to the treated pots. Highest infection was observed in Columbos with 75.00%, closely followed by CIP 30.5 with 72.00% and Astra with 71.00% infection. The lowest infection was observed in NOM PO D with 17.00%. Sheepody expressed as the most severe variety with 35.55% infection, followed by Columbos, Raja, IP with 32.79%, 33.05% and 30.80%, respectively. The least severe varieties were Granola with 18.53% and NOM PO E with 18.43% infection. With high incidence of bacterial wilt infection noted, some of the varieties revealed as more tolerant to BW infection. In terms of harvested tubers, treated pots showed significant differences with yield. Granola obtained more number of healthy tubers and more infected tuber was obtained by Raja. This implies that the amount or level of Ralstonia solanacearum inoculum inoculated to the treated pots influenced the susceptibility level of the varieties evaluated to BW.
