Influence of arthropod faunal diversity on seed corn production in three different corn ecosystems of Bukidnon [Philippines]

This study was conducted in mid-elevation (800 masl) monocropped (Dalwangan), mid-elevation (800 masl) diversified (New Ilocos) and low elevation (200 masl) monocropped (Musuan), in dry and wet seasons using CMU var. 10 and USM var. 10 from November 2007 to October 2008. This was conducted to determine the arthropod species composition, species richness and species diversity, destructive pests, predator-prey associations, insect pests associated with ear rot incidence, and extent of insect pest and ear rot incidence association. A total of 47,961 arthropods were collected composed of 298 species with Hymenoptera (96 species), Coleoptera (82 species), Hemiptera (43 species), Diptera (26 species) being the largest group. However, relative abundance was highest in Hemiptera represented by Stenocranus pacificus Kirkaldy (BPH) with 51.67%. Mid-elevation diversified had the highest species richness (262 species) and diversity value (H' = 1.716) followed by mid elevation monocropped (224 species, H' = 1.517) and low elevation monocropped (129 species, H' = 1.274). Cut worm, field-cricket were destructive at seedling stage while corn borer and corn earworm in the reproductive stage. BPH (Dephacidae) and aphids (Aphidae) were most abundant but populations were regulated by brown and green lace wings (Hemenobiidae and Chryopidae, respectively). Yield loss was correlated to the rotten kernel caused by Diplodia sp., Fusarium sp. and corn borer damage. The ear rot incidence was further enhanced by the damage of corn borer and corn earworm. The extent of yield loss was dependent on the incidence of ear rot, damage of corn borer, location and cropping season.
