Borines, M.G., Philippines Univ. Los Baños, College, Laguna (Philippines). Chemical Engineering Dept.
The lecture aims to present data and analysis on different parameters with respect to separation of glycerol, a by-product obtained from transesterification of Jatropha curcas oil, using acidulation process. The effect of varying concentrations and residence time on acidulation of the crude glycerin layer in terms of glycerin recovery using three types of acid, namely: hydrochloric acid, phosphoric acid, and sulfuric acid, were presented. The optimum acid concentration and residence time were determined for each type of acid using the Response Surface Methods (RSM) and were also discussed in this paper. Using the RSM, mathematical models for glycerol recovery via acidulation were aslo presented as a function of acid concentration and residence time.
