Effects of knowledge sharing in swidden agriculture among Hanunuo-Mangyans in Oriental Mindoro, Philippines

The effects of knowledge sharing to the practice of integral swiddening of the Hanunuo-Mangyan community were determined and analyzed using the knowledge sharing processes, i.e., socialization (informal education) and externalization (formal and nonformal or extension education) and statistical tools. A survey and key-informant interviews involved a total of 248 respondents, which were supported by other qualitative research techniques. Knowledge sharing process had been influenced by religion, school and government's extension programs. As a result, socialization was functioning effectively in sharing of knowledge components of integral swiddening only when found beneficial and advantageous to the present time. Continuous externalization, on the other hand, was leading the educated and trained Hanunuo swiddeners to the internationalization phase of knowledge conversion. The overall effect of knowledge sharing was perceived low in the biophysical, demographic, economic, political and cultural aspects of swidden agriculture. Knowledge sharing process had associations with other variables, particularly age, household structure and total number of household members working in the farm.Of the three processes, the formal education had a high significant effect to swidden agriculture.
