Rice production and marginal productivity under different ecosystems: a case study of three villages in Komering irrigation area, Sumatra, Indonesia

Komering irrigation project is one of the largest irrigation development projects in Indonesia, implemented in Sumatra. Since the project is still on-going, there existed distinct ecosystems and in terms of wetland rice fields, the ecosystem is considered to change from rain-fed to irrigated ecosystem. Based on the questionnaire survey conducted on three villages under different ecosystems, this paper aims to analyze the rice production mechanism and efficiency of resource allocation. The production function analysis revealed that land was the most significant factor in increasing rice production, followed by labor under the rain-fed ecosystem and fertilizer under the irrigated ecosystem. There was a tendency of a change from labor-intensive to material-intensive rice farming under the rainfed and irrigated ecosystems, respectively. Marginal productivity analysis also revealed that more land could profitably be employed in order to raise rice income. Hence, through the development of irrigation, farmers will have opportunity to expand their operated land area by increasing cropping intensity, leading to increase rice production and farmers' income.
