Preliminary study of organic vegetable production in Thailand with special reference to Chaing Mai

This paper reviews the current status of the organic vegetable industry in Thailand in general, and discusses production and marketing activities in Chiang Mai province in particular. The Central and Northern Regions are the two main areas of organic vegetables, where a number of large-scale companies operate the business in the former, while small organic farmers predominate in the latter. The main institutions providing organic certification services in Thailand included the Organic Crops Institute, Department of Agriculture (DOA), The Organic Agricultural Certification Thailand (ACT), Northern NGOs, and foreign companies. Export of organic products was accredited by the certification systems of IPOAM, CODEX, EU Regulation, US Federal Organic Food Production Act, and Japanese Agricultural Standard Law. Most of organic producers in Chiang Mai grew vegetables as part of integrated farming, and their production method consisted of crop rotation and seasonal planting. Their vegetables could be harvested every month and provided more than 3,500 baht of net income per month per farmer. Producers sold their products to middlemen immediately after their harvesting.
