The primary goal of dentistry should be the preservation of the dentition but for varying reasons, tooth extraction may be in the interest of the individual presented with clinical problem, especially in dogs and cats. Tooth extraction is far by the most commonly performed oral surgical procedure in companion animals. Several techniques have been developed to extract teeth in different animal species. Many of these have a lot of similarities with human extraction techniques, whereas others are species-specific. They can be divided into sample or closed extractions and surgical extraction techniques. Simple extractions involve the removal of teeth or root fragments using an intraoral approach without exposing or removing alveolar bone. More complex, surgical techniques are used during surgical extraction which involves exposing and removing the alveolar bone and covering the created defect with mucoperiosteal flaps.
