The reconstruction and expansion of the waste water treatment plant (WWTP) in Subotica has solved problem of wastewater treatment, processing and disposal of generated sewage sludge. At the WWTP of Subotica stabilization of sludge has done as a process of anaerobic digestion of sewage sludge at mesophilic conditions (34-38 deg C). Anaerobic digestion is the process of decomposition of organic and inorganic substances present in the sludge in the absence of oxygen, and the final products are methane, carbon dioxide and new biomass. The efficiency of the digestion can be monitored by measuring the volatile solids (organic) that are found in the sludge, and are a fraction of the total dry matter. This organic matter in the sludge is biodegradable, and biogas is created only from decomposition of this matter in the feeding sludge. The aim of this study was to observe the impact of qualitative and quantitative composition of the feeding sludge on the process of digestion and the biogas production, in order to optimize the efficient management of this process.
