Kinetics of microwave distillation of the essential oil from aerial parts of sage (Salvia officinalis L.) was studied. The kinetics was described by using a two-parameter model of unsteady-state diffusion through the plant material. The results were compared with those of the traditional Clevenger hydrodistillation where the oil yield was 1.35 ml/100g of dry plant material for 150 min. The microwave hydrodistillation was examined in the same apparatus, except for the heating that was performed by the microwave power of 800W. The same oil yield was obtained for 75 min.
