Canine ehrlichiosis - modern problem

The ehrlichia is rickettsia, small, pleomorphic, gramm negative, obligatory intracellular microorganism belonging to genus Ehrlichia, family Anaplasmatacae. Vectors are ticks of Rhipicephalus sanguineus. In them the agent is multiplying, and it is transmitted to host via bite of tick. Ehrlichiosis is seasonal disease, most frequent in warm part of the year and in time of activity of vectors. In Serbia, first case of E. canis canine ehrlichiosis was registered in Belgrade territory, by microscopic axamination of peripheral blood smear Giemsa method colored and proof of morulae in monocitic cells (Pavlović et al., 2002). Since than till today the disease has been detected in veterinary practices throughout Serbia by commercial fast diagnostic kits. It our investigation we used the blood sera of 50 dogs from different cities in the Republic of Serbia during 2011. Methodology used in this research is IFA-indirect immunofluorescence assay. Results showed that population of stray dogs, we were tested, had no contact with vectors of disease. All sera examined by IFA method were negative. Conclusion: Although the results of our tests were negative, the data from existing literature, about spread of tick population (the vector ticks Rhipicephalus sanguineus are second most spread tick species in Serbia) show that we can expect spread of disease similar to problems caused by Babesia canis. The current data show that ehrlichiosis is widely present in some area of our country.
