In seasons 2005-2006 vegetation pot trials experiments with three genotypes of chickpea (Cicer arietinum L.) were performed. The origin of genotypes was of Syria: genotyp 88194 (type kabuli), CM-7-1/85 (type desi) and Punjabi (type desi). The influence of water stress was tested on some physiological parameters (stomatal closure, relative water content in leaf, osmotic potential, free praline content and osmotic adjustment). The stomatal closure was one of the most rapid reactions induced by water deficit. Observed cultivars differed in capacity for osmotic adjustment. Among tested genotypes, cultivar Punjab 91 (type desi, Syria) showed higher capacity for osmotic adjustment in these cultivars. Maintenance of water content and turgor in the leaf tissues resulted from expression of morphological and physiological mechanisms of resistance and tolerance to drought which might be useful in the screening genotypes with different level of drought tolerance.
