Analyzing the economic viability of producing and marketing alternative agricultural enterprises: a methological approach

Quirós G, R.E.
The purpose of this paper is to describe the essential features and critical variables in the process of producing and marketing agricultural goods. A production and consumption system for countries in the Caribbean and Pacific Basins is complex, especially when viewed from a wholistic perspective. The process can be more manageable when approached first in general terms followed by a more focused examination of the individual functions and processes. Nevertheless, analysis of these factors is a continuous, indivisible process, and all operations are closely interrelated. Although most agricultural products destined for export have a domestic consumption component, the critical elements for analyzing the potencial of products considered primarily for export and domestic consumption will be discussed separately. An effort was made to present this analysis in general terms for the most familiar products; however, many differences arise, some substantial, some more subtle, depending on the nature fo the product and whether or not it is perishable. It is important to remember that failures in any one of the stages frequently undermine the entire process. The body of this paper will highlight selected critical factors in evaluating an alternative enterprise
