The aim of the investigation was to study the characteristics of Marianna GF 8/1 clonal rootstock and the possibility of growing Marculesti 19 apricot cultivar on it, in the region of Central Southern Bulgaria. Planting material of that cultivar/rootstock combination was planted for comparing it with conventionally produced trees of the same cultivar grafted on the seedling rootstock Dzhanka 4. The following growth characteristics were followed out – tree height, trunk cross-section area, annual shoot increment and shoot number and structure. The trees grafted on the clonal vegetative rootstock had more vigorous growth compared to the trees of the control variant. The differences in tree height varied from 30% to 10% for the first and the last year, respectively, and the data statistical processing confirmed the differences in the separate years. The results obtained about the stem cross-section area and the annual shoot increment in the vegetation period, were also in favour of the hybrid GF 8/1. It was established that as a result of the more vigorous growth of the trees on Marianna rootstock in the first years in the plantation, the total length of the first-order shoots was almost twice bigger than that of the control.
